As we begin the new year, it’s a perfect time to explore the residential design trends shaping 2026. Homes are evolving to meet changing lifestyles, environmental realities, and the growing expectation that buildings actively support the people who live in them. Thoughtful planning and intentional design are no longer optional; they are essential!

To identify these trends, we drew on multiple sources, including client interactions and insights from professional publications and organizations such as Architectural Record, Architectural Digest, HGTV, and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Home Design Trends Survey (HDTS). Combined with current market research, these insights provide a clear picture of where residential design is headed this year.

In 2026, architecture emphasizes smart design, responsive materials, and balancing economic realities with ambitious sustainability goals, all while creating more livable and personalized spaces.

Three Key Residential Design Trends for 2026

1) Wellness-Oriented Homes That Support Comfort and Health

Wellness-oriented design continues to gain momentum and is increasingly viewed as a baseline expectation. Homeowners are prioritizing spaces that promote comfort, health, and overall well-being. Key considerations include:

● Strong visual and physical connections to outdoor environments.

● Maximizing access to natural light to support comfort and productivity.

● Flexible layouts that adapt to changing uses and evolving work patterns.

Additionally, design features that elevate daily comfort and quality of life, such as spa-like bathrooms, natural materials, and interior environments that encourage relaxation, continue to rise in popularity.

2) Sustainable Design and Nature-Connected Living

Sustainable, environmentally conscious design remains at the forefront of residential trends. Clients are increasingly seeking eco-friendly solutions, energy efficiency, and features that strengthen the connection to nature. Examples include:

● Business Insider with research from Zillow, indicate sustainability and resilience features, including zero energy ready homes, green living features, and climate risk mitigation, are rising in popularity, aligning with broader sustainability priorities.

● Data from Realtor.com highlights that indoor-outdoor design, sustainable features, and energy efficiency measures are among the fastest growing trends, emphasizing the importance of nature-connected, performance-oriented homes.

● The AIA Home Design Trends Survey also shows growing interest in daylighting and expansive windows, particularly in kitchens and baths, signaling a strong preference for naturally bright and healthy interiors.

3) Flexible and Resilient Homes for Modern Living

Flexibility and resilience are becoming central to residential design. Homes are increasingly built to serve multiple needs, whether for remote work, leisure, or evolving family dynamics, while remaining durable and functional over time. Adaptability now includes both lifestyle changes and long-term resilience. Key strategies include:

● Multi-use spaces that maintain relevance as needs evolve.

● Durable materials selected for long-term performance and reduced maintenance.

● Planning approaches that anticipate future modifications, reducing the need for costly renovations.

Looking Ahead: Preparing Homes for the Future

At Architecture EL, we remain committed to staying ahead of these evolving trends and applying thoughtful solutions that support our clients. By focusing on wellness, sustainability, adaptability, and resilience, we help create homes and residential buildings that are not only functional today but prepared for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.

We are pleased to share an update on one of our new and exciting projects, an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) being constructed in Casco, Maine. This project, designed for a private owner, reflects the growing interest in these ADU flexible spaces.

One of the amazing aspects of being an architect is the ability to create projects of all scales – whether they’re small and simple in scope or elaborate and intricate in design. Every project begins with truly listening to the client, understanding their needs and desires, and translating that vision into a thoughtful, functional space.

As the architect on this new property, we were asked to design an ADU that would support the owner’s desired residential and small scale commercial needs. The design rendering (see picture here) is a two level design that features a residential apartment on the second floor and a compact commercial space on the first. This combination allows the owner to create a property that is functional, efficient, and aligned with the evolving ways people live and work.

As with many projects, this one presented early site and civil challenges. Through careful coordination and the engagement of a new contractor, those issues have been fully addressed. With those steps completed, the project has moved forward with the successful pour of the concrete foundation (see picture for this progress). The site is now well prepared for the next phase of construction.

From here, the team will pause until the spring thaw, when conditions will allow framing to begin. We look forward to continuing our work on this thoughtful and efficient ADU alongside the contractor and other tradespeople; and will share additional updates as construction advances.

This ADU is a perfect example of that balance, and it is well positioned to move ahead after resolving some recent challenges.

We are very excited to expand our firm to meet the growing demand with two new key hires!

We recently added two new team members, Jack Hilgren and Ronell John, to our AEL family as we continue growing to meet the increasing demand for our services. These strategic hires reflect our ongoing expansion and commitment to delivering thoughtful and enduring architectural solutions across Western Massachusetts and beyond. Jack and Ronell each bring a diverse range of experiences and talents that will further strengthen the firm’s capabilities and client service.

Jack Hilgren joined AEL full-time after completing a part-time role while finishing his master’s degree in architecture at The University of Massachusetts Amherst. He originally planned for a career in engineering, but shifted his focus to architecture in order to engage more directly in the creative process. In his role as a Designer, Jack supports our residential and commercial projects through design development and project management. His favorite project to date has been a full home renovation in Wilbraham, where he enjoyed guiding the design from concept through development. Outside of work, he enjoys travel, time with family and friends, and spending time with his two cats.

Ronell John also joined us in the role of Construction Documents Expert. Ronnell brings nearly two decades of professional experience in architectural drafting and design. He began his career as an AutoCAD technician and has since worked on a variety of project types. At AEL, he prepares and coordinates design and construction documentation, contributing to the technical excellence of the firm’s work. What drives him the most is the rewarding experience of seeing a design evolve from a concept on paper to a physical space that serves its users. Originally from Trinidad, he now lives in Wilbraham, Mass. When he is not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife, relaxing, and savoring one of his favorite meals, Trinidadian Chicken Roti.

“We are thrilled to have Jack and Ronell join our team,” shares Kevin Rothschild-Shea, our company’s Owner and Principal Architect. “Each of them brings a unique perspective, energy, and skill set that strengthens our ability to serve clients and expand our creative potential.”

As housing demands evolve and homeowners seek smarter, more flexible ways to use their property, Accessory Dwelling Units—commonly known as ADUs—are gaining serious traction. The many options available for ADUs offer a creative solution to housing challenges while maximizing space and value. But what exactly is an ADU—and just as importantly, what isn’t one?

What Is an ADU?

An Accessory Dwelling Unit, also known as an ADU, is a secondary, self-contained residential living space located on the same lot as a primary home. Sometimes called a granny flat, in-law suite, backyard cottage, or secondary suite, an ADU can take many forms such as:

Detached units like a small cottage or guest house in the backyard.

Attached units which are physically connected to the primary residence, often through shared walls.

Interior conversions, for example, transforming a basement or attic into a livable space.

Garage conversions – reimagining an existing garage as a livable dwelling.

A few key features to keep in mind that define an ADU include:

It is a permanent residential unit, not a temporary structure.

It is legally part of the same property as the main house and cannot be sold separately.

It provides independent living facilities, which means it must have its own kitchen, bathroom, sleeping area, and typically a separate entrance.

They can be attached to the main house, within it (such as a basement apartment), or completely detached (such as a backyard cottage).

They often share utility connections with the main residence.

What an ADU Is Not

While ADUs are incredibly versatile, they’re often misunderstood. Understanding what does not qualify as an ADU is just as important as what does. These are NOT an ADU:

A bedroom, bonus room, or finished basement without a dedicated kitchen and bathroom

A second kitchen in the main house that does not have its own living space and full bathroom

A space that does not have a lockable, private entrance

Temporary structures (like RVs, trailers, or tiny homes on wheels). ADUs must be permanent and built on a foundation.

Common Misconceptions

ADUs are not just for rental income, they can serve as flexible living spaces for family, guests, or work.

Building an ADU is not always prohibitively expensive or time-consuming; costs and timelines vary by design, location, and contractor.

ADUs do not necessarily decrease property value; in many markets, they can increase it by adding functional living space.

They’re not always suitable for short-term rentals (for example listing on Airbnb) because many municipalities prohibit short-term rentals of ADUs to encourage long-term housing stability.

Why ADUs Matter

ADUs serve a range of purposes: they can house aging parents, provide income as rental properties, or offer space for young adults or guests. They’re recognized for their flexibility, smaller environmental footprint, and ability to gently increase housing density without changing neighborhood character.

At ArchitectureEL, Inc., we view ADUs not just as an architectural trend but as a meaningful response to the housing crisis, and its shifting demographics, affordability challenges, and lifestyle needs. Whether you’re exploring an ADU to support multigenerational living, generate rental income, or simply make better use of your property, understanding what they are—and what they aren’t—is a critical first step.

Ready to Explore an ADU?

If you are, it is important to remember that even though they’re compact, ADUs require thoughtful design, permitting, and construction—ideally with an architect who understands zoning and local building codes. We’d love to help you on this journey and are here to help you navigate the process from concept to completion. Contact us to schedule a consultation and learn how we can help bring your ADU vision to life.
